Deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Ashok Dhavle who was arrested on the charge of drug trafficking is suspected to have links with some of the leading drug peddlers in the city.

Dhavle was arrested last week along with Amar Singh alias Munna, 45, at Worli while they were carrying brown sugar worth Rs1.5 crore in the international market. They were on his way to deliver the contraband to a woman. The deal was said to have been fixed earlier this month. Dhavle procured the drug through his contacts in Rajasthan and it was brought to the city by Singh.

Singh, a record sheet drug peddler, came in contact with Dhavle when he was arrested in 1998 for possession of drugs. According to investigators, Dhavle had since been in touch with Singh and is suspected to have been dealing in and supplying drugs it to his clients in the city.

Singh has told the police that on several occasions Dhavle had threatened to implicate him in fake cases if he did not let the officer use his links to supply drugs.

“We are interrogating Dhavle to know more about his contacts. It is suspected that he has links with some other drug peddlers,” said an officer. Dhavle dealt in only high-cost drugs as their profit margin is very high.
