Opposition parties have lambasted Medical Education and Horticulture minister Dr Vijaykumar Gavit for his leisure holiday trips to Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. The Bhartiya Janata Party has demanded the expenses of the tour to be recovered from the minister as he has misused the tax payers’ money and has cheated people of the state.

The minister is on the official tour as the horticulture minister for 15 days — July 10 to 26. But his itinerary says otherwise. His tour was full of visits to wet, wild worlds, hot air balloon flights and movie world. Though his office claimed that the minister has taken farmers from the state to the foreign countries to study farming of custard apple there, DNA had reported about the reality in its July 19 issue.

Responding to the report opposition parties have slammed the minister and his party NCP. “It’s a waste of money of the taxpayers of the state. The minister is not supposed to spend the public money at wet, wild world and hence we have demanded the recovery of the money from him,” said Madhav Bhandari, spokesperson, BJP.

Bala Nandgaonkar, group leader of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena in state assembly, said that unfortunate for the people of the state to have such a responsible minister.

However, NCP has defended the minister. “The issue is being blown out of proportion. Does the minister have no right to enjoy his personal life even though on official tour? Once he is back, he himself will explain about the official work he undertook on the tour. There is no need for party to seek an explanation as the due permissions were taken by Gavit,” he said.
