The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) collected Rs33.62 lakh in property tax from 770 property owners on the very first day of new financial year 2011-12.

Expressing happiness over the collections, deputy commissioner and assessor and collector of taxes, Vilas Kanade, said the department got a good response from citizens on day one of the new financial year.

Kanade said that citizens paying before May 31, 2011, would get a rebate of 10% if the tax is less than Rs25,000. For tax higher than that the rebate would be 5%. Kanade said citizens should avail the rebate by paying tax by May 31.

According to Kanade, the state government had passed an order on January 14, 2009, and the PMC general body (GB) had passed a resolution to grant rebate on property tax to those who paid within the first two months of the financial year. The rebate is applicable only on the dues of general tax for the current financial year.

According to Kanade, the property tax bills of 2011-12 are being distributed by a private agency, Atharva Enterprises. All regional ward offices of the PMC would also make online bills available on www.punecorporation.org. Citizens who did not pay property tax before the due date would be penalised.
