Junior college admissions in the Mumbai Metro region for the academic year 2012-13 will be only online, and the entire process will be completed within 25 days unlike last year when the admission process was spread over 52 days.

State education minister Rajendra Darda made this announcement on Thursday, while replying to questions in the Vidhan Parishad.

Admitting that there were problems in the junior college online admission process last year, the online admission process would stay, Darda said. “The world is moving towards computers and online admissions.”

Among the other changes to be introduced this year is ensuring that students do not apply to colleges where they had little chance of getting admission.

“If a college's final cut-off last year was 90%, then only a student who has scored 85% or more can apply to that college this year. If a student with 84% applies to the college, a message will pop up on the screen saying he is not eligible to apply."

He said this rule was being introduced because last year many students applied to sought-after colleges despite scoring poor marks. This resulted in 40,000 students not getting admission through the online process, thus forcing the state government to start an offline procedure.

Another concern among the members was the betterment system — when students seek to move to a better college should a vacancy arise.

“To avoid this problems, this year, students will be given only one chance to move to a ‘better’ college,” the minister said. And, students would be able to take up the new admission only after cancelling the current one to avoid mix-ups, Darda added.
