In order to ensure quick response of the civic administration to the problem of water logging in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched an electronic surveillance project, with video cameras in 50 locations prone to water logging.

Additional city engineer Vivek Kharvadkar told mediapersons that municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak had asked the civic administration to implement this project on priority so that there would be quick response to the problem.

He said out of 50 locations, cameras have been fixed in 20 locations and every day, images are gathered through these cameras on an experimental basis. The cameras are connected through optical fibre network to the central server in the PMC. Depending on the availability of data connectivity, the project may be completed within a month.

He said at present, the problem with water logging is that the administration gets information after there is a serious problem. But thanks to electronic surveillance, the disaster management cell and the ward offices concerned  would be able to monitor the situation continuously.

So, as and when the problem occurs, they would know immediately and would be able to take action. “The sole purpose of the project is to ensure quick response,’’ he said.

Cameras have been set up at Alka Talkies Chowk, Warje Chowk, Market Yard, Sagar Colony, Kothrud and other areas. The cameras have the technical ability to grab visuals at night using infra-red rays. According to civic officials, the images gathered at 50 locations in the city including roads, squares and nalas would be useful for other purposes like helping accident victims and detection of crime.

Water logging in many locations and subsequent loss to life and property in the city in 2010, after heavy downpour on two occasions, had led to a public outcry and a demand for action by the civic body.
