Gaurav Subash Gangotri (20), from Yavatmal district in Maharashtra, who appeared for the soldier nursing assistant test of the Indian Army on Saturday, appeared tense: He was about to operate a computer for the first time. However, within five minutes of the 15-minute practice session, he was the first to express ease with the new system.

Gangotri was among the 226 candidates who appeared for the computer-based entrance test (CBET) held in Pune. This is for the first time  that the recruitment directorate of the Indian Army introduced a fully computerised entrance test for the recruiting process.

Brig Manohar Thomas, deputy director general (DDG), Recruiting for Maharashtra, Gujarat & Goa told DNA, “The pilot project has been run successfully by the Pune recruiting zone, where 226 candidates appeared for the CBET. These tests will become the benchmark for implementation of the CBET for recruitment throughout the 73 centres conducting recruitment for the army.”

Brig Thomas said the computer-based exam will enhance effectiveness of the recruitment process and improve the testing conditions for the candidates.

“The CBET is indeed a positive step forward in ensuring greater effectiveness of the army’s recruitment procedure,” he said.

Colonel Bharat Dabral, director recruiting, Recruiting Office (HQ), Pune said the new system can save time and manpower. The system is tamper-proof, too.

“Candidates clearing the initial round of physical tests of running are photographed and fingerprinted using a biometric system to prevent impersonation. The use of technology has made the entire recruitment process transparent and simple,” he said.
