From F-1 racing to the cyclothon and marathon, the 4.7-km Bandra-Worli Sea Link has hosted a number of events. However, its toll operator has decided not to allow any more promotional events, following the chaos caused by a reality television show on February 1.

“We have had two events on the sea link — the marathon and the cyclothon. Apart from these, we do not want any promotional activities to be held on the sea link, as they often end up obstructing the traffic flow,” said Sharad Sabnis, chief engineer of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

He added that the corporation has also decided not to recommend any such events in future. Though there was no policy to prevent such activities being held on the sea link, corporation officials did not wish that it be used for the same.

On February 1, the TV channel had decided to sponsor motorists’ rides between 7pm and 9pm on the sea link to promote the show’s commencement. “We had given them conditional permission and were expecting them to follow certain rules to avoid traffic disruption,” said Jayant Mhaiskar, managing director of Mumbai Entry Point Ltd (MEPL), the toll operator.

“However, they started distributing pamphlets at the toll plaza, they also had models to promote the event. This disrupted traffic in violation of our agreement. Once we got to know about this, we stopped the promotion,” he said.

The MSRDC is also gearing up to patent the sea link as a brand. “Once the sea link is branded, nobody will be able to use its pictures for any commercial use. Even those who were part of its construction will have to take permission before publishing its photos,” said another senior MSRDC official.
