The soon-to-be reopened German Bakery in Koregaon Park would not be the same dimly-lit, kitschy place with rough wooden benches. The site of the horrific bomb blast two years ago, the bakery attained an iconic status in the last 22 years.

Unlike the earlier ground floor seating layout, the bakery would be a two-storey building, with the main seating arrangement on the first floor and the counter on the ground floor.

More than aesthetics, it was the question of supposed encroachment on the side margin that compelled bakery owner, Snehal Kharose, to change the layout of the joint.

The seating arrangement was earlier spread across the ground floor, with the kitchen located behind the counter of the bakery.
“Places like Vaishali and Rupali have also faced action for supposed encroachment on the side margin, so we decided to re-design the entire bakery,” she said.

According to her, in the new layout, the seating arrangement would be spread across 1,000-square feet area on the first floor, and the counter would be in the 750-square feet on the ground floor. Unlike the rough wooden benches, the resurrected bakery would have chairs and benches. However, Snehal said that the menu and the general ambience of the bakery would remain unchanged.
