We need to empower and educate each and every household to change its attitude towards girl child rather than waiting for the government to pass the Women Reservation bill, expressed a panel on Monday.

The panel included writer Sudha Menon, social activist Arnawaz Damania, legal professional Mariza Dalal, International Institute of Information Technology (I2IT) president Aruna Katara, Film and Television Institute of India faculty Gayatri Chaterjee and children’s writer Deepak Dalal and others.

I2IT on the eve of Centenary International Women’s Day had organised a seminar ‘Prowess 2011’ on Monday.

The aim behind the seminar was to encourage girl students to continue with their careers and to inspire them.

Each panelist spoke on their views, how they have reached to their respective positions, the struggle, difficulties and challenges they faced to achieve what they are today. The speakers also expressed that after achieving success it is time for them to give back to the society.

In rural India where feudal system is deeply rooted, gender equality is not a word commonly heard, but people like us need to increase our participation to educate and enlighten them, the experts expressed.

While talking to the media, they said, “Today the equations towards gender equality are changing, at least in the urban areas. But still there is a long way to go. Until and unless gender equality prevails, women will have to fight for their rights.”

When asked who is responsible for a woman’s suffering, Damania said, “It is the woman who’s against the success of another woman.”

However, other panelist differed over it and said, the very thought that a woman is enemy of woman, comes from patriarchal attitude. Women are by nature compassionate and environment friendly as they are the nurturers. Reservation bill is a controversial subject but now it has been proved that women are as good as men in every field and thus deserve their dues.

“Today, we are in a position to give back to the society,” said Katara adding that women above 50 are at peace as they don’t have to prove themselves any more. “The competition should be with one self than with the world,” she said.

Deepak who’s the only male in panel said, “Gender equality is good for humanity in the world and I believe it should be accelerated with time.”
