The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leadership has directed the mayor and deputy mayor of Pimpri-Chinchwad, Yogesh Behl and Dabbu Aswani respectively, to tender their resignations from the posts as they have completed one year in office.

The party leadership has been following the policy of rotating the posts of mayor and deputy mayor in Pimpri-Chinchwad among party corporators after one year in office.

On the directions of deputy chief minister, Ajit Pawar, the NCP leader, Ghanshyam Shelar, came down to Pimpri from Mumbai last week to take the resignation letters from Behl and Aswani.

However, none of them have resigned as yet. Behl was away in Singapore and returned only on Saturday. He did not meet Shelar.
According to Behl’s supporters, the mayor of Pune, Mohansingh Rajpal, who belongs to the NCP, also has completed a year in office. “The mayor of Pune city continues to hold that post. But Behl’s resignation is being demanded by the party,” they said.

Behl told media persons that the reason behind the sudden demand for his resignation from the mayor’s post was not known. He pointed out how he worked overtime to strengthen the party and attended over 5,000 programmes as mayor. He said he would meet Pawar and findout why his resignation was being sought. Meanwhile, local NCP corporators Mahesh Landge, Tanaji Khade, Datta Sane and Ramadhar Dhariya have started taking steps to ensure that the city has a new mayor and deputy mayor. Recently, these NCP leaders placed before Pawar their demand that Behl be replaced.
