For the last one year, Anjuman Sinha Ara, a 17-year-old from Bangladesh, could not walk properly because of a 12cmx12cm tumour on her left knee. Ara, who is suffering from bone cancer, even dropped out of school.

But, last month, the doctors at PD Hinduja Hospital at Mahim, successfully removed the tumour, giving the teenager a new lease of life.

“Ara was taking chemotherapy at Tata Memorial Hospital. But, the tumour in the leg was a problem and doctors had advised amputation. That's when her parents brought her to us," said Dr Manish Agarwal, consulting orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in bone and soft tissue tumours, PD Hinduja Hospital.

“The tumour was big and very close to the main artery vein and nerve. That’s why the doctors must have suggested amputation because she was not responding to the chemotherapy," added Dr Agarwal.

During the operation, the doctor removed the bone and the tumour and reconstructed the knee cap with artificial implant (metallic prosthesis).

"We wanted to save her limbs and we succeeded. She can move around with the help of a walker. In six weeks she will be able to bend her knee and in another six months she will be able to walk on her own," said a confident Dr Agarwal. Ara is currently at Tata Memorial Hospital to complete her chemotherapy course.

According to doctors, bone cancer is very rare and it affects mainly children.

There are three types of bone cancer: osteosarcoma, which develops in growing bones and affects usually between the ages 10 and 25, chondrosarcoma, which starts in the cartilage and affects those above 50 years of age and Ewing's sarcoma, which begins in nerve tissue in bone marrow of young people, often after treatment of another condition with radiation or chemotherapy.
