Mumbai boy makes it to Chemistry Olympiad

A student of BMC-affiliated Bhavani Shankar Junior College, Dadar, Maity is the only student from the city who has qualified for this prestigious competition.

Sixteen-year-old Smarak Maity is one among four students who will represent the country at the 43rd International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) to be held in Turkey from July 9-18, 2011. Maity recently aced his IIT-JEE exam, securing the 50th All India Rank.

A student of BMC-affiliated Bhavani Shankar Junior College, Dadar, Maity is the only student from the city who has qualified for this prestigious competition. He was one of four selected out of over 30,000 candidates who appeared for the qualifying exams.
Last month, Maity bagged a bronze medal in the Asian Physics Olympiad. “I hope that my lucky streak continues. And this time, I want to clinch the gold,” he said.

Son of a BARC scientist, Maity wants to follow his father’s footsteps and wishes to pursue research in Physics. The other three students who will be part of Maity’s group are Dravyunsh Sharma from Ghaziabad, Anant Pushkar in Bokaro and Diptarka Hait from Kolkata.
