A day after emerging the second largest party in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) election, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief, Raj Thackeray said the party is happy to play a role of the opposition party and putting an effective check on the ruling parties.

After the huge victory in the PMC elections where the MNS won 29 seats, Thackeray met his victorious candidates at the party’s office in Narayan Peth on Saturday evening.

Later, speaking to the media, Thackeray said, “I am satisfied with the municipal election results. I am not greedy for power in the PMC. The MNS is not interested in making an alliance with other parties just to get power in the PMC. If the time comes, we will sit in the opposition and there we will do a good job of putting a check on the ruling parties and ensuring development of the city.”

About the success of the MNS in the civic polls, he said, “The Congress and the NCP have been playing with the emotions of the people for long and Puneites were looking for a strong option, which the MNS provided to them. I could address only one public rally in Pune and in fact I could not hold a single rally in Pimpri-Chinchwad, but still voters showed confidence in our party. Now I will visit both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad frequently.”

Thackeray added, “Lack of basic infrastructure, especially the poor state of public transport in Pune will be our focus issue for the city. Our corporators are young and they will contribute to the city’s development, however the decision regarding important issues will not be taken without discussing it with me.”

A large number of MNS supporters including the elected candidates had gathered at the MNS office to welcome Thackeray. However. when he reached the office, a huge crowd gathered, which resulted in chaos and many of the elected candidates could not meet Thackeray.
