Travelling on roads of Mumbai’s outskirts could turn out to be a pleasure by the end of 2012.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is now shifting focus to the rest of MMR, particularly for the road connectivity and flyovers. With close to 350 km of new roads and 12 flyovers, the authority has a budget of Rs700 crore for the infrastructure development, said top MMRDA officials.

“We have about 181 km of under-construction roads in Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar and Thane, Dombivli and Kalyan region. Another 165.21 km of roads are at proposal stage. Moreover, 12 flyovers in different towns are also under proposal or undergoing construction,” said MMRDA additional commissioner SVR Srinivas.

Providing additional information about this development, MMRDA spokesperson Dilip Kawathkar said that the flyover in Panvel will be two km long and is expected to be completed by February 2012. “The cost of this flyover is Rs141 crore. We are also constructing four flyovers on the Ghodbunder road at a cost of Rs150 crore and they will be completed between March and June. Three flyovers in Thane city are also under construction at a cost of Rs60 crore,” he said.

Apart from the ongoing projects, MMRDA will soon be calling tenders for flyovers at Mumbra junction, Sheel Fata, Mankoli, Rajmoli and Vanjar Patti. It has planned to construct several new roads.
