The rape and murder of three minor girls in the past five months has made Kurla’s Nehru Nagar residents suspicious of anyone hanging out with locality kids.

In fact, so much is the paranoia that not just strangers, even parents or relatives accompanying minor girls are being questioned to confirm that the girl is safe, and that none of them is the serial killer targeting her.

This alertness on Sunday reportedly saved a six-year-old girl from being kidnapped. It was late afternoon when a few autorickshaw drivers and locals noticed two people with a minor girl near the Kurla bus depot in Alidada Compound, where two of the three victims lived.

They found the girl was crying, and when confronted, the two could not answer who the girl was, and where they were taking her. One of the two unidentified persons  fled when people started assaulting them, while the second one has been handed over to the Nehru Nagar police.

An autorickshaw driver from the depot stand near  the railway station said, “We saw two people, who appeared to be vagabonds, with a minor girl.

“When they were asked who the girl was, one of them immediately fled. We nabbed the other man.” He added, “With three cases of minor girls being raped and murdered, everyone is keeping an eye for the accused who is still at large.”

According to locals, the person who has been handed over to police is not normal, and it could be that he  has consumed drugs or alcohol. His identity is not known, but police officers from several investigating teams have started questioning him.

It has also been confirmed that the girl is a resident of Alidada Compound and was playing outside her house at around 2pm when suddenly she went missing.

When contacted, senior police officers from Zone-VI refused to
comment.
