While millions of house hunters anxiously wait for the announcement of the housing lottery of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada), the housing department has asked the vigilance department to inquire into a non government organisation (NGO)- Aarjoo Swabhiman Nagrik Samiti- which allegedly is promising to get Mhada houses for the poor sections of the society.

PP Badgeri, under secretary of the ministry of housing has written a letter to the chief engineer who also is the coordinating officer of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to initiate an inquiry against the NGO following a number of complaints received by the government.

According to the letter, the NGO holds meetings on every Tuesday and Saturday and gets an amount ranging anywhere between Rs800 to Rs3,800 from those interested in owning a Mhada flat.

“These house hunters are given some electronic product of a company by the name Aarjoo electrical. They are also given a form along with a few documents. Actually these are basic documents that the NGO has obtained under Right To Information (RTI) act from various agencies including the Reserve Bank of India, Mhada, Slum Rehabilitation Authority as well as some banks. However, poor people are given an impression that these are official documents indicating that they are likely to get a house,” said Mhada spokesperson Vaishali Sandan Singh.

Singh further added that the set of documents given to the people also includes certain JNNURM figures.

“Mhada is the nodal agency to carry out projects under Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP). Under BSUP, we get financial support from JNNURM. However, the said NGO is nowhere involved in this,” said Singh.

The housing ministry letter has also asked the vigilance department to thoroughly inquire into the functioning of Aarjoo and if needed to lodge a FIR with the economic offences wing of the Mumbai police.
