A Vile Parle traffic policeman on Thursday chased down a final-year MBBS student of KJ Somaiya College after he jumped a signal, rammed his car into a woman crossing the road, and then tried to speed away.

The incident occurred on Thursday at around 12.30 pm when Smita Patil, 45, a Vile Parle resident, was crossing the road on Western Express Highway at Hanuman junction in Vile Parle. Shrideep Yagnik, 22, who resides in Thakur Village, Kandivli, was returning home in his Hyundai Accent car from Somaiya College after attending lectures. Though the signal was red, Yagnik decide to drive through it, ramming into Patil in the process.

“Traffic police constable Sandeep Satam, who was patrolling near the signal, witnessed the entire incident. In his statement recorded later, he said that he then chased the speeding car on his motorbike and managed to stop it by overtaking it and halting his bike in front of it,” said a police official at the Vile Parle police station.

Satam also noted that even after he parked his bike in front of the car, Yagnik tried to drive around him, but he did not let him get away. “People who were crossing the road rushed Patil to nearby Cooper Hospital, where she was treated for fracture,” said the police official.

“Yagnik has been arrested for causing hurt due to rash and negligent driving and for violating traffic rules. Patil, meanwhile, is out of danger,” said senior police inspector Ramdas Ambre of the Vile Parle police station.
