While the state had taken extra measures this year to ensure no malpractices during the board exams, the Maharashtra state board on Wednesday found mass copying at an exam centre in Uran, on the outskirts of Mumbai.

The board has launched an inquiry on Tukaram Vazekar High School and Junior College in Phunde, after centre authorities were caught helping students during their class XII economics and biology paper.

On Tuesday, board authorities received a tip-off from Nikam Kumar, a senior teacher at the centre. “The supervisors were advised by the school chairman to turn their backs on students copying during the exams. The school is afraid of losing its grant and is resorting to such extreme measures for it,” said Kumar.

After receiving the tip-off, the flying squad paid a surprise visit to the centre. “Unfortunately, the centre had got wind of our visit and so we were unable to catch the students red-handed. But we did manage to catch some with chits in their pockets,” said Eknath Dhanawade, education inspector of Raigad district, who was part of the flying squad.

According to Dhanawade, the supervisors in the centre were allowing students to cheat as the school wanted all of its students to pass the make-or-break board exams.

“This particular junior college does not have a good record of students clearing the exams. In the past, many students have failed and so the college might have decided to give them a ‘helping hand’,” say Dhanawade.

Board officials say that mass cheating often takes place in centres located in far-flung areas where authorities are afraid that the students might not pass the exams unless they receive outside help.

Dhanawade said that they have started an inquiry against the college. Meanwhile, the students have been warned and allowed to sit for the remaining papers. “We did not want to debar the students. We have given them a warning,” he added.
