Residents of the Jai Chamunda Co-op Housing Society situated near Dhobi Ghat have complained against Lokhandwala Infrastructure Pvt Ltd to the Mumbai crime branch, alleging that the slum-dwellers have been cheated into giving up their property for developing under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) by the developer.

Following the complaint, the Mumbai police has written to SRA authorities, asking them to verify the claims. The property in dispute admeasures around 7,500mts and is valued at Rs150 crore.

Chairman of the society, Vishram Padam in his complaint, alleged that their society never gave consent for redevelopment. “Out of 1,417 members, 917 members have consented to the SRA scheme of a different developer, not Lokhandwala,” said Padam.

Moiz Lokhandwala, managing director, Lokhandwala Infrastructures Pvt Ltd, however, rubbished the allegations. “To start with, a society by the name Jai Chamunda does not exist at all. There is only one society, Shri Sai Baba Nagar, which we are developing,” he said. “We have got consent of 90% of the residents,” he added.

However, in his complaint, Padam states that Lokhandwala’s claim is false. “Signatures of 656 members shown on the resolution are not even of the persons in whose name the slums have been registered,” states the complaint.

When contacted joint commissioner of police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said that the police had received the complaint and it is being looked into.
