The Bombay High Court on Friday directed a leading Marathi daily to file affidavit stating whether it had transferred 41.4% of the shares in name of Lila Parulekar, who is co-owner of the newspaper.

Lila, daughter of Nanasaheb Parulekar — founder of a Marathi daily in Pune — owns 41.57% shares of the Marathi daily, Sakal. The Supreme Court, in 2005, had passed an order directing the newspaper to transfer Lila’s shares to her.

Pradip Havnur, advocate for the social activist who had filed the public interest litigation alleging that no one is taking care of ailing Lila, argued that the shares were not transferred till date.

Advocate Sunil Kadam, who claimed that he has been handling Lila’s legal matters for the last 15 years, said that he wasn’t aware if the shares were transferred.

“Then what do you know of her (Lila)? You claim to be with her or 15 years and don’t know whether the Supreme Court directions have been complied with or not,” said justice Roshan Dalvi.

Havnur pointed out that Lila’s bank account with Bank of Baroda has been instructed that no cheques are to be cleared without Kadam’s go-ahead.

A division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice Dalvi asked Kadam to file affidavit giving details of Lila’s personal bank accounts.

Manoj Oswal, member of NGO Jeevan Raksha Animal Welfare Trust which was started by Lila to take care of 300 off animals staying at her bungalow, informed the court that despite high court directions they are not being allowed to meet her.

Subhash Jadhav, advocate for the newspaper, argued that the same sort of allegations are being made against the newspaper before the magistrate court at Pune and high court.

“The nature of complaints remains the same. The parties keep changing but they are all related,” added Jadhav.

Jadhav informed the court that they have identified a plot of land near Pune where the animals could be shifted.

The court said that most of the animals which require care could be shifted and 50 animals that are in good health can stay with Lila.
