The domestic maid and her husband who were arrested by the crime branch of Mumbai police recently for allegedly kidnapping an 18-month-old boy from Malabar Hill claimed during the investigations that they suffered from AIDS. They hatched the plan to kidnap the child for money since they wanted to secure the future of their three children.

According to the crime branch officials, Sangeeta, who was working at the residence of Yatin Shah in Sudha Buiding at Malabar Hill had allegedly abducted Shah’s grandson Vihaan on March 31. Shah had brought Vihaan from the United States where his parents reside, a few days before his abduction. Investigations revealed that Sangeeta’s husband Hari Singh was also involved in the crime.

Officers from the Unit II of the crime branch rescued Vihaan and arrested the couple from Manmad railway station on April 2 and thwarted their plans to go to Delhi and demand a ransom of Rs5 lakh.

“During the investigations, the couple claimed that they were infected with AIDS and had hatched the kidnapping to get some money in order to secure the future of their children. Sangeeta claimed that she was detected with the infection four years ago at the time of delivery of her third child,” said police sub-inspector
Bhaskar Kadam of the crime branch.

He added that the couple have three children aged 9, 6, 4 years respectively and are staying with a relative in a village at the India-Nepal border. “They had hatched the kidnapping plan a month ago and had also attempted to kidnap Vihaan’s brother Shirom, but had aborted the plan,” he said.
