Saryu Sanghvi, one of the founder-members of the Aundh Vikas Mandal (AVM) in January 1988, emphasised that every member of housing societies in Aundh should also be a member of the mohalla committee or residents’ associations, for the betterment of the locality.

“Unless the whole of Aundh becomes a part of the AVM, we cannot achieve our goals of developing the area we live in,” Sanghvi said.

She was speaking at DNA’s ‘My Locality My Voice’ interactive meeting for residents of Aundh Panel No. 8, held at the Chaitraban Residency Club House, New DP Road, in Aundh on Sunday.

Another senior member of the AVM, DVR Rao, said frequent interaction of the people with their corporator enabled the latter get a first-hand review of the problem areas of the locality.

“It is citizens who are aware of the problem areas of the locality. By constantly interacting with the corporator, problems can be brought to the forefront and thus help in seeking solutions to them,” he said.

According to him, citizens’ participation in the mohalla committee helps achieve goals faster. “A mohalla committee gives an individual a platform to reach the corporator and vent the problems faced in a better way. The success of AVM proves this point,” Rao said.

He said the ITI Road walking plaza and the Nana-Nani Park were among the biggest successes achieved by the mohalla committee’s joint efforts.

“We could solve the parking problem faced on many roads by constantly raising the matter with the corporators and the civic administration. We have prevented the felling of trees in the locality for construction and have got the broken electricity distribution point boxes in the locality replaced,” he said.
