Darshan Adhalkar, a 20-year-old from Bandra, has spent 12 days in police custody. His offence — allegedly raping his 19-year-old neighbour. However, his actual fault was that he had been rejecting the girl’s proposal to be her paramour for the past two years. The girl who was allegedly raped by another neighbour told the police that it was Adhalkar who raped her.

According to the police, the incident occurred on March 28 when the girl (name withheld to protect her identity), who is also a resident of Bandra, was raped by her 32-year-old neighbour Parmanand Deshpande at Chhota Kashmir, a popular picnic spot inside the Aarey Milk Colony in Goregaon.

The Aarey Sub police said that Deshpande took the girl to Chhota Kashmir for a picnic. “The accused raped her after reaching there. However, she started bleeding heavily, and the accused took her to her friend’s house. After changing her clothes, he got her admitted to a hospital in Santa Cruz,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

The doctors at the hospital got alarmed at the nature of the victim’s injuries and the excessive bleeding. “The doctors immediately called the victim’s parents and also informed the police,” the officer added.

A team from the Aarey Sub police station reached the hospital and took the victim’s statement. “In her statement, the victim said that she was raped by Adhalkar and that he fled from the spot after the incident. She further said that she called up Deshpande as her condition was bad. She added that it was Deshpande who helped her and rushed her to the hospital,” the officer said.

Another officer said, “We arrested Adhalkar on the basis of the victim’s statement. During his questioning, he maintained that he was innocent and had got nothing to do with the incident.” The officer added that the police grew suspicious about the victim’s statement because she kept changing her version, and there were several discrepancies in them.

“After a lady constable took her into confidence, the victim confessed that it was Deshpande who had allegedly raped her and not Adhalkar,” the officer said. Following this, the police arrested Deshpande as well.

However, the police are wary of the victim and have decided to
make Adhalkar and Deshpande undergo a DNA test. They have sent their samples to the Kalina forensic laboratory for tests. Both of them are currently in judicial custody.

“We had no option but to act on the victim’s statements and arrest Adhalkar first and then Deshpande, because that is what the law says,” said senior inspector LK Tonpe.
