Unrelenting rain leads to a series of accidents, house collapses, landslides and water logging across the city.
A second consecutive day of rainfall became responsible for a series of mishaps in the city. An unidentified boy fell into a pit at Gautam Nagar on Anik Panjrapole Link Road in Chembur.
The incident occurred at around 7pm on Sunday. The fire brigade and an ambulance were called in and a rescue operation commenced. Officials said that two boys were walking along the pit when one fell in. The other managed to escape and informed some policemen.
Meanwhile, five separate incidents of collapsed houses occured in the city. However no injuries were recorded. The mishaps took place on RC Marg at Vashi naka, Nehru Nagar in Kurla, Kasaiwada in Chembur, LBS Marg in Chembur, Mulund, Nagpada and Kamathipura.
Around noon on Sunday, a rock fell on the compound wall of a municipal school in Walkeshwar. Earlier in the day, a minor landslide buried a shanty in the Suryanagar slum in Vikhroli (West). Dhanaji Gujjar suffered minor head injuries in the incident but was declared stable at Agrawal Hospital.
Another minor landslide occurred on the compound wall of a Mhada building in Vikhroli Parksite area. In total, 39 incidents of uprooting of trees were also reported because of heavy rains.
When it came to the perennial problem of water-logging, around 90 draining pumps were used across the city to flush out excess water. Around 24 were operated in the island city, 24 in the western suburbs and 40 in the eastern suburbs.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall affected flight operations. Due to persistent rain and a drastic drop in visibility below 450 metres, flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport were suspended twice, between 10am and 11am.
"This resulted in two go-arounds of flights which landed safely later. All operations were normal later in the day," said a MIAL spokesperson.
