Instant results in Thane civic polls

You will not have to wait for days to get the results of Thane civic body elections in 2012.

Results will be made available within minutes of the polls through the Geographical Information System (GIS).
Through the system, polling results of every ward will be collated instantly and sent through an SMS to a central monitoring authority.

The technology will ensure transparency and security as there will no relocation of electronic voting machines.

“We have received an in-principle approval to go ahead with the use of the GIS system during elections. After the completion of this process, we will be the first civic body in the country to use GIS technology for elections,” said RA Rajeev, commissioner, Thane Municipal Corporation.

E-voting will take place in two wards on a trial basis. A voter will have to first check if his name appears on the voters’ list.

He will then have to get himself registered with the TMC for getting an identity. Only after receiving the identification, will the voter be eligible to vote online from anywhere in the world.
