IIT-B offers permanent solution to pothole problem

We need only 2-3% of the Rs550 crore spent on road developments to fix pits, says professor.

Moved by the plight of Mumbaikars, the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) has promised to find a permanent solution to pothole problem if the government provides funds and the required data.

“The government had spent more than Rs550 crore on road developments, but finding a permanent solution to potholes will cost only 2-3% of this amount if the BMC provides us all required data and other needs,” said SL Dhingra, senior faculty at the transportation engineering department, IIT-B.

With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is struggling to keep the city roads pothole free despite spending crores on its upkeep, experts from the IIT-B said they need to be practical in finding a permanent solution.

According to Dhingra, most of the right technologies have been included in the manual for BMC engineers, but the work has to happen according to the expert guidelines. At the same time, the manual should be updated by adding modern technologies for better results.

“I have thought about a pavement system management plan under which little laboratory research can be done and workshops can be conducted for BMC engineers aiming to find a permanent solution to the issue. But, the authorities have to be ready to join us. It will be a huge task to find a solution for the entire city, but if help is provided, it is not impossible,” Dhingra said.

“Entire city’s mapping can be done with the help of GPS to ensure continuous check on roads. It is observed that such problems occur at similar places. There has to be a concrete reason for this,” said  Dhingra.

“While mapping the city, wards can be further sub-divided and officials or contractors should be made responsible for each sub-wards. These people should be made answerable to any damages to the roads. Factory manufactured quality control should be done.”

According to Dhingra, life of a properly constructed concrete road is minimum 40 years. But in the present conditions, after almost every year, the roads develop potholes.
