With dahi handis getting taller each passing year, the number of people getting injured during the festival is also rising. It is now an open secret that Janmashtami and injuries go hand in hand.

With over 200 govindas injured during this year's celebrations, the surgery department of the Sion Hospital is conducting a study on dahi handi injuries. The study will highlight the need for safety precautions during the festival.

Dr Satish Dharap, head of the trauma centre at Sion Hospital, said, "This is one event where people risk their lives in the name of pleasure. In other sports one gets bruises, but this sport can lead to permanent disability or even death. We are analysing the data and planning to find potential preventive measures to reduce injuries."

The study is being conducted in association with the preventive and social medicine department of the Sion Hospital.

According to doctors, the study will help in finding a safe level or height for dahi handis. It will help us know how many used safety gears like harness and what was the impact of it in terms of preventing injuries.

The department made a detailed proforma for dahi handi injuries.

“We have collected details like level of the fall, height of the dahi handi, previous experience of the person, protective gear worn by the person and whether he was drunk while playing the game," said Dr Ramesh chaturvedi, head of the PSM department of the Sion Hospital. The proforma had details on the type of injury and the treatment given to the person. "Most of the victims got spine injury, fractures, neck injury," said the doctor.

The form also included details of medical facilities available at the site of injury and time taken to reach hospital.
