The corporate-political nexus in the telecom sector is the latest fodder for Hindi films. After a little-known production house announced a film based on corporate lobbyist Nira Radia’s life last year, another venture inspired by the 2G spectrum scam is slated to hit theatres this month.

Monica — The Politics of Murder, starring Divya Dutta in the title role, borrows heavily from the lives of Radia, slain journalist Shivani Bhatnagar and poetess Madhumita Shukla. The protagonist is an ambitious journalist who gets caught in the crossfire between corporate bosses, politicians and media barons.

Interestingly, the film is produced by Lucknow-based Congress leader Kush Bhargava. Industry sources revealed that singer-turned-producer Anup Jalota was roped in as the presenter of the film after Bhargava could not find support for his politically-sensitive debut film.

“The movie revolves around Monica’s journey from small-town India to the corridors of power,” said director Sushen Bhatnagar. “The story is loosely based on the lives of real people who have lived and died similar deaths.”

Dutta, on the other hand, feels that the film also underlines the trend of an increasing number of women who are stepping out of the confines of their homes and seeking their place under the sun.

“Those who make the right decisions and succeed in life are hailed as heroes. They become the inspiration for others, while those who make wrong decisions or falter on their chosen path are labelled as immoral beings.”

The unusual title was inspired by Mona or Monica, the eternal vamps of Bollywood. “The vamp in Hindi films pays for her sins eventually and is killed. The title of the film consciously tries to underline this connect,” Bhatnagar added.

Actors Ashutosh Rana, Rajit Kapur, Tinnu Anand and Kittu Gidwani play key roles in the movie.
