Shiv Sena’s student wing, Bhartiya Vidyarthi Sena (BVS), seems to be on the verge of being disbanded. For more than a week now, the organisation is without any leader, as its former president Abhijit Panse has been transferred to Bhartiya Chitrapat Sena as the president. His departure is considered as the ‘beginning of the end’ for the party’s student wing.

BVS, which was the recruitment agency for bringing in young blood, had become dormant in last few months, especially after the formation of Yuva Sena, the Sena’s youth wing headed by Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray’s son, Aditya.

With Yuva Sena being given the top priority, the importance of BVS has come down drastically. One more reason for this disregard is that the party leadership does not want comparison between the leadership of Aditya and BVS’s former boss Raj Thackeray, who rebelled and went on to form his own party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

In Yuva Sena’s first meeting, it was announced that BVS had been disbanded, but immediately after, Uddhav Thackeray intervened, stating that BVS will continue working under Yuva Sena. “There is no doubt that BVS’s area of work has been reduced considerably.

It will be limited to college level only and that too under Yuva Sena’s supervision. But party will have to keep BVS working for at least sometime now, otherwise it will send wrong message in the party cadre ahead of BMC elections,” said one of the party sources.

Since Yuva Sena is handling issues related with education, as happened with the Mumbai university senate election and recently with the issues of medical interns, questions are being raised over the need for BVS.

Sensing the changing tide, several current BVS functionaries had applied for posts in Yuva Sena in some recently held interviews. “We can all see what is happening. If BVS is not going to work as before, we should join Yuva Sena,” said one of the interviewees. However BVS’s former boss Panse, is confidant that the organisation will grow further under Aditya’s leadership. Yuva Sena president Aditya Thackeray refused to comment on the issue.
