The retrieval work on the stuck Turkish Airline (TA) aircraft at Mumbai airport entered its third day but nothing much could be achieved.  As a result, the main runway, 09-27, remained closed till midnight, resulting in flight delays of up to an hour.

Fliers at the Mumbai airport on Sunday had no option but to wait in or outside the terminal building.

“My two friends and I are going to Chandigarh by a Kingfisher flight which was to leave at 1pm today. We reached the airport at 11am from Mohammed Ali Road and got to know that the flight has been rescheduled to 2.20pm. Nobody informed us about the delay till we reached here,” said Mohammed Hanif Nalwala.

Amit Singh, a movie cameraman who was booked on the same flight IT 3185, was also angry that the airline did not bother to inform him about the delay. “I stay at Goregaon, but still I started early as it was raining and I did not wish to get caught in the traffic and miss my flight. I reached here at 11.25am for the 1pm flight but was told by the airline that the flight has been rescheduled to 2.20pm... What is this? Why do they take our mobile numbers if they cannot send even an sms,” he asked.

However, passenger Sendhil Kumar’s wait was prolonged as he missed his connecting flight to Madurai and now had to wait till Monday. “Me and my family were booked on this Air India fight Musket-Mumbai which was to reach here at 8am. But due to congestion, we reached here at 11am, while our connecting Mumbai-Madurai flight was at 9.40am,” he said, adding: “Now we will be taking the same flight on Monday morning.”

Meanwhile, the removal of the TA Airbus 340-300, which has been stuck since September 2, was on. “The process of recovery of the aircraft is on. MIAL has deployed all resources and completed construction of the pavement to remove the aircraft from the site. The next steps are subject to an assessment of suitability of ground and weather conditions,” said the spokesperson for Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL).
