Use police posters warning people about imposter cops to rob a woman of her gold chain.
It’s a classic case of criminals trying to stay a step ahead of the police. While the ‘real cops’ are trying their best to contain the increasing incidences of people being duped by fake cops, the fake cops are coming up with innovative measures to dupe people.
The cops have been putting up banners, posters, and hoardings all over the streets and junctions to create awareness among the citizens about the menace of fake cops.
However, on Thursday Versova police were outsmarted, when a fake cop duped a woman in Andheri by showing her the posters put up by the police.
A police source said that the impostor approached his target wearing the uniform of the traffic police and pointed out a poster pasted on the wall.
“He told the woman that there are people who are pretending to be police, roaming around in the area. He told her that these impostors dupe the women and run away with their ornaments and that’s why the police department has put up posters warning people about the menace.”
“The fake cop asked the victim to give her gold chain, which she was wearing, to him, so that he can keep it in her bag for safe-keeping. The victim, who was hesitant initially, agreed to hand over the chain,” the police source adds.
However, after sometime, the victim realised that she had been hypnotised and there was no chain inside her bag.
DNA has been consistently reporting about the menace of the ‘fake cops’ who have been duping women, especially senior citizens across the city, using some well-scripted modus operandi.
The menace of the fake cops has gained such proportions that most of the police stations, especially those in the western suburbs have formed special teams to try to track down these impostors.
These teams are roaming around in plainclothes and private cars, trying to track the fakes down. The cops are also making undercover woman cops wear ornaments and move around on the roads, so as to attract the attention of the fake cops, and thus try and catch them.
The police have been trying to create awareness among the public by putting up posters and airing short films about the menace on local cable televisions.
