The Malabar Hill police on Saturday night arrested an extortionist posing as a member of the Dawood gang, who was demanding a ransom of Rs5 lakh from the managing director of a reputed Nariman Point-based IT company.

“The extortionist, Dev Singh Sukhdev Singh Baba, 31, is resident of Delhi. Baba was arrested red-handed outside the Malad railway station on Saturday night while accepting Rs1 lakh from constable Anil Jadhav, who was posing as delivery boy of the MD.

The mobile phone used to make threatening calls was also seized,” said a police inspector from the Malabar Hill police station. Baba was remanded in police custody till July 15 by a magistrate court on Sunday.

Bharat Parekh, 50, (name changed to protect identity), who stays with wife and two daughters at a Nepean sea Road apartment, received the first call on July 6 at around 1.50pm when he was at the company's Noida office. The caller introduced himself as a Dawood gang member, demanded Rs5 lakh, and warned that if Parekh informs the police, he will be eliminated.

When a terrified Parekh disconnected after saying he cannot raise such a huge amount, the extortionist called on the landline at Parekh's Nepean sea Road home and threatened his wife. After the frequency of the calls did not abate even after two days, Parekh mustered courage to file an extortion complaint at the Malabar Hill police station on July 9.

On July 10 morning, when the caller contacted Parekh, as per the instructions from the police, Parekh agreed to pay the first installment of Rs1 lakh and said his 'angadia' (courier boy), Rajesh, will deliver the cash. He was asked to send the money near Malad railway station (West) at around 9.30pm the same day.

Jadhav then posed the courier boy and went to the spot with a briefcase. Baba was nabbed while collecting the ransom amount by a police team dressed in plain clothes.
