The state government wants the Force One to be battle-ready to cope with any kind of disaster. And to ensure that the elite commandos get the best of training in disaster management, it has sought the help of the Los Angeles Emergency Operation Center. Leroy Baca, sheriff of Los Angeles, has assured chief minister Ashok Chavan that they will be more than happy to train the elite force.

Chavan, who is on a tour of the US, met Baca on Tuesday. He led a state delegation on a visit to the emergency operation centre, and studied the technology and the measures undertaken by the personnel there to combat disaster-like situations. Baca, himself an expert in terrorism control, has contributed a lot in this sector.

The sheriff, during his meeting with the chief minister, agreed to visit Mumbai next month and sign a memorandum of understanding to seal the cooperation deal.

“Not just the commandos and the officers of Force One, jawans of other forces too will be trained in disaster management by experts from the Los Angeles centre. Baca has agreed to visit Maharashtra next month. He is expected to sign an agreement during the visit,” a source from the chief minister’s office said.

The Chavan-led delegation was awed by the infrastructure and the setup of the emergency operation centre. “The centre has foolproof security against any natural or man-made calamity,” an official press note said.

Force One, the combat force conceived after the 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai, has been trained by the National Security Guards. The 256-strong army has been trained to handle explosives by the College of Military Engineering and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory. Also, experts had been brought in from three countries.

City agencies dealing with public transport might be trained by the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transport Authority. It operates both underground and surface public transport through electronic mechanism, and has offered to train transport authorities in Mumbai free of charge, the press note said.
