The former Union cabinet secretary, BG Deshmukh (84), passed away at Noble Hospital in Hadapsar at about 7pm on Sunday.
The managing director of the hospital, Dr Dilip Mane, told DNA that Deshmukh was admitted to the hospital on Thursday after he fell down at his bungalow in Magarpatta City.

There was major blood clot in his brain, due to which he was operated upon on Friday evening by neurosurgeon, Dr Avinesh Gupte and his team.

However Deshmukh’s condition remained critical even after surgery and he was on ventilator till he breathed his last. He was administered medicines to increase his blood pressure.
“There were several complications that developed due to the clotting of the blood in his brain following which Deshmukh passed away,” Mane said.

Considered to be one of the finest bureaucrats that the country has ever seen, Deshmukh was a widower.  His cremation took place at Vaikunth crematorium, where prominent citizens of the city were present.

Deshmukh was associated with several organisations in the city.  The president of Nagrik Chetna Manch, Maj Gen (retd) SCN Jatar, described him as an upright and no-frills man.  “He shielded me from political pressure when I was chairman of Indian Oil Ltd. Pune has lost someone who genuinely took interest in different
aspects of the city,” he said
