“If you want overall development of the city, elect a single party to power in Pune,” said city MP, Suresh Kalmadi.

He was speaking at the inauguration of a musical fountain, 3D multimedia laser show and waterscreen at the Vasantrao Bagul garden on Sunday. This latest addition to the Bagul garden was inaugurated by minister for industries, Narayan Rane.

Also present were minister for cooperation, Patangrao Kadam; chairperson of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) education board, Sangeeta Tiwari; local Congress corporator and leader of opposition at the PMC, Aba Bagul; deputy mayor, Prasanna Jagtap; former minister for home, Ramesh Bagwe; MLA, Vinayak Nimhan; municipal commissioner, Mahesh Zagade and cine star, Amisha Patel.

The inauguration turned out to be a show of strength for the local Congress leaders. While the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) share power both at the Centre and the state, their relation has soured after the election of Bharatiya
Janata Party’s (BJP) Ganesh Bidkar as chairman of the standing committee at the PMC last month.

It might be re called that the NCP sided with the BJP to ensure Bidkar got elected, at the expense of the Congress.

Conspicuous by their absence was the entire leadership of the NCP, although the invitation card named deputy chief minister, Ajit Pawar; Baramati MP, Supriya Sule; and Pune mayor, Mohansingh Rajpal as guests.

Taking a dig at the NCP for what he called “politicising of development”, Rane said, “This is a very wrong attitude on part of the NCP.”

Amisha Patel, the star of the evening, referring to her Congress roots, in the form of Rajni Patel, senior leader from Gujarat, expressed her willingness to contest elections on a Congress ticket in the future.
