A day after 34-year-old architect, Abhinandan Soman, was killed by a speeding dumper opposite Mrutyunjay Temple on Karve Road, his helmet was lying on the footpath, bearing testimony to the safe driving practices that he followed.

The helmet, however, did not save his life on Monday afternoon when the speeding dumper hit Abhinandan while over-taking another vehicle.

On Wednesday, a florist who witnessed the accident said, “I saw that the dumper was speeding and over-taking other vehicles when suddenly Abhinandan, who was on his motorcycle, came under the rear wheels of the dumper. It was raining heavily and a pedestrian who saw the gruesome accident fell unconscious and had to be rushed to hospital.’’

At Abhinandan’s residence at Kakade City, Karvenagar, his one-and-half year old daughter, Swara, was looking around for her father and asking her aunt when he was going to return.

Speaking to DNA, his sister, Manisha, who is an architect said,  “As usual, he was going to drive his car, but due to the heavy rains, he preferred to take his motorcycle. He would strictly follow all the traffic norms. He was wearing a helmet.’’

Distraught and shaken up by the tragedy, Manisha said the spot where her brother was killed is a serious accident-prone area which has been left unattended by the traffic police and the civic authorities.

“The traffic police are responsible for my brother’s death,’’ she said with extreme grief and pain over the tragedy.

Abhinandan’s wife, Amruta, works as a team leader with Tech Mahindra in Hinjewadi and has been in shock ever since her husband’s death. Her father-in-law, Jayprakash Soman (65) who runs an advertising consultancy, told DNA that he and Abhinandan had planned to go together for an official meeting.

“He told me that he will take darshan at the temple and return soon. I was waiting for him. But at 2 pm, Amruta received a call from Abhinandan’s cellphone and the police were enquiring about her. They asked her to rush to the Sassoon General Hospital as Abhinandan had met with an accident,’’ Jayprakash said.

He said that it was only at 5 pm, when he persistently asked about his son’s condition, that he was taken to the post-mortem
department. “I wish we could rewind to the time when my son would have taken his car instead of the motorcycle and this accident would not have happened,’’ he said.
