The police had an unusual request when they went to south Mumbai’s prominent colleges — St Xavier’s, Sydneham and HR College — on Thursday morning.

“We want students to perform street plays for us,” they said.

A part of Mumbai Police’s special campaign ‘Jagrook Mumbaikar’, the street plays will begin from Tuesday.

Colleges have been given a script in Hindi, depicting how carelessness of citizens can lead to terror attacks. But the police have given the students the liberty to make changes to the script, which is written by professionals of Lintas.

The three-minute play would be staged at crowded spots in the city.

“A collective effort is needed in war against terrorism,” said Naval Bajaj, additional commissioner of police, south zone. “We want citizens to be alert about every suspicious activities in their surroundings. Street play is an important medium to reach out to common people.”

The first play would be performed by a team of police personnel at Hutatma Chowk on Tuesday. “The students will take over from August 17. We have approached three colleges till now.”

The campaign will go on for 10 days at various places in the city. “They needed our help and we welcome the move,” said Frazer Mascarenhas, principal of St Xavier’s College.

“I am yet to see the script but I am excited to be part of it. July 13 blasts are still fresh in our minds. Every Mumbaikar has to play a role in making the city safe,” said a St Xavier’s College, requesting anonymity as he had been asked not to divulge details yet.

An HR College student said: “We have not been told yet where we are going to perform, but officials have assured our principal that they will take good care of us.”
