Constant rain halts traffic in some areas of Pune

Motorists in city affected by jams, water logging, malfunctioning of signals; some stranded along with vehicles.

The incessant rainfall in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad brought normal life virtually to a standstill in some areas. With several streets of Pune getting waterlogged, vehicles moved at snail’s pace.

In some areas, vehicles were stranded as it became impossible to drive. Commuters faced traffic congestion on Fergusson College Road, Jungli Maharaj Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, Pashan, Baner and Aundh areas of the city.

The stretch between the petrol pump near the Regional Traffic Office and the Criminal Investigation Department office was congested due to office workers, as they were on their way home.

Several spots in Pune Camp and parts of Centre Street, MG Road, East Street, Shivaji Market, Bootee Street and Modikhana, besides the Pune police commissionerate, directorate of women and child welfare and the resident doctors’ quarter of Sassoon Hospital experienced water-logging.

What compounded woes for motorists was that traffic signals became non-functional in many areas, leading to chaos.

There were traffic jams on Bhau Patil Road in Bopodi and near Spicer College following the rain. People were stranded along with their vehicles.

According to traffic police inspector, Vijaykumar Palsule, “There were traffic jams in some parts of the city, but for not more than half an hour. We have not received any reports of mishaps so far.”

Fire brigade officials, when contacted, said they received several calls from Prabhat Road, Bhandarkar Road, Dhole Patil Road and Pashan about falling of trees, following which they rushed to conduct rescue operations.

The traffic police made two road diversions due to water released from the Pavana and Khadakwasla dams on Monday. The Thergoan bridge was closed  as water from the Pavana dam was released. Traffic from Kalewadi Phata to Chinchwadgaon was diverted to Hegde Bridge.

In Pimpri-Chinchwad, water logging was reported at the subways near Akurdi and Kasarwadi railway station, affecting vehicular traffic. Both the subways was closed to traffic on Monday.

Traffic jams were also reported in Chinchwad, Pimpri, Bhosari, Pune-Nashik highway and Mumbai-Pune highway.

River water entered the Moraya Gosavi temple in Chinchwadgaon, with devotees thronging the temple as the Ganesh festival was round the corner. Incessant rains washed away internal roads of Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial hub in various places.
