Fed up with escapist replies from public representatives over several incomplete projects, residents’ associations plan to make the candidates in fray for the civic polls accountable for the false promises made during last elections.

Politicos make tall claims in the run-up to the civic polls, but when it comes to execution, they pass the buck, residents complained.

They now want answers.

“During campaigning, parties make empty promises, but we want to question an aspirant on how he/she is going to pursue any project, how the funds will be spent and the time it will take for the work be completed. This should help us in opting for a candidate who has a clear idea of the city’s developmental needs,” said Kirti Adarkar, secretary, Andheri’s Old Lokhandawala Residents’ Association.

It’s not only the Andheri association that is going to stress on accountability, other citizens’ groups too want to take up similar awareness programmes.

Goregaon resident Subhash Bellare said the issue will come up for discussion at his society’s meeting.

Martin D’souza, secretary of Cosmic Heights from Wadala also said his society will decide its course of action after checking the feasibility of promises made by candidates.

“The municipal corporation should strictly follow assurances given to taxpayers,” D’souza added.

Chembur-based Advanced Locality Management and Networking Action Committee is also chalking out activities on similar lines.

Rajkumar Sharma, the committee chief, said as the polls near, the citizens’ body wants it people to exercise their franchise first.

Reiterating the group’s plans of putting up banners that will publicly pull up netas for several issues that have been troubling the suburb.

“Our weekly meetings over the ensuing days will focus on civic issues in the run-up to polls. We want people to come out and vote first. On the polling day, we want to reach out to each household in the locality and appeal to people to cast their vote. Besides, we will co-ordinate with authorities on ensuring the election website remains functional at least till the polls are over,” Sharma said.

Similar views were expressed by Nilesh Patil, an office-bearer of a Bhandup-based ALM. He said weekly meetings of the ALM will be more election-centric and focussed on pushing residents towards voting.
