The Mumbai traffic police on Saturday booked 2,804 motorists for violating traffic rules during a special drive against people indulging in drunk and rash driving and speeding. The police could not confirm whether it was the highest number of motorists booked in a single day, but the drive on Christmas Eve certainly took many by surprise.

“As many as 119 motorists were arrested for drunk driving, four for dangerous driving and one for rash driving across the city,” said DCP (traffic) Anu Bhitre of the Mumbai traffic police. “We have collected more than Rs3.25 lakh in fines.”

The action should serve as a deterrent to those who violate traffic rules regularly as the drive will continue till December 31 to ensure fewer accidents during the festive season. An additional force of 150 policemen will assist the traffic police department in maintaining vehicular traffic and law and order during the drive.

Some people also had to empty their wallets for parking their vehicles in no-parking zones. “The number of people who were fined for this offence was 1,246. An astonishing 678 people on two-wheelers bore the brunt for not wearing helmets,” traffic police sources said.

Jumping a signal is a repeatedly committed offence in Mumbai. On Saturday, 222 motorists were greeted by traffic police officials for not pressing the brake despite the signal turning red.

Thirty-seven others were booked for not wearing seat belts. Four motorists were fined for talking on their mobiles despite being behind the wheel and two others were booked for not having a PUC certificate.
