Even as the city police struggle to curb the increasing incidents of gold chain snatching incidents, it apprehends that a single gang could be involved in the crime.

Sources in the Pune police confided to DNA that the modus operandi in almost all cases that have taken place in the recent past suggest that a single gang could be involved.

"In most of the incidents, the miscreants are using 150 CC vehicles like Pulsar to commit the crime. The modus operandi of snatching is also similar in almost all cases. We are of the opinion that all these miscreants are of the same gang,'' remarked a police official involved in probing the chain snatching incidents.

Police officials admitted that the gang members are well versed with every locality of the city and are managing to escape after committing the crime with ease. However, the officials are still unsure whether they hail from Pune or some other neighbouring districts.

The police have alerted jewellery shops in the city to be extra cautious while buying gold ornaments from people.

"They have been told to inform the local police immediately in case of the slightest suspicion about the sellers,'' police sources added.

According to police sources, the police are also trying to ascertain the whereabouts of nearly 100 gold chain snatchers who are out of jail, either due to bail or have completed their prison term.

"Most of them have given false addresses and there is no trace of them. The police constables had been to their homes as per the addresses given by them. But they turned out to be false. We are investigating whether those elements are involved in the incidents,'' police officials added.

Police inspector Ram Jadhav who is heading the special team to crack the chain snatching cases along with a sub-inspector and 10 police constabless exuded confidence that the team would tackle the problem.
