A pall of gloom has descended over Cement Lines in Khadki following the death of 9-year-old Pramay Amrut Patil, who stayed there with his mother, Shobha.

Pramay was run over and killed by a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus on Saturday. He was a standard IV student of Kendriya Vidyalaya near Bombay Engineering Group (BEG).

“For Shobha, her son was the only hope. She is shattered now. She does not have any other children,” said grieving neighbours. Pramay’s father, Amrut, was an army jawan and died in 2006.

Shobha works at the nursery school of the BEG on a meagre salary. The Cement Lines in Khadki is an army residential colony for jawans and their families.

The neighbours told DNA that Shobha has already left for her ancestral village in Chandgad taluka in Kolhapur district for the last rites. The neighbours sent Pramay’s body to that village on Sunday.

The residents told DNA, “It was big shock for us as he was the only hope for his mother. He was good at studies and wanted to become an army officer in the future.”

The residents claimed some witness told them the driver of the PMPML bus was driving at high speed as the road was deserted due to the World Cup cricket final match between India and Sri Lanka.

“Some passengers even cautioned the driver to reduce the speed, but he did not pay heed,” the residents alleged.

At 2 pm, Pramay was dropped at 512 Army Base Workshop by the school bus and he was crossing the road when the PMPML bus knocked him down and dragged him for 10 feet. The boy died on the spot.

The passengers of the bus caught the driver, Mahendra Talpe, and handed him over to the police, who arrested him for reckless driving.
