Maharashtra state government announced on Wednesday that the much-delayed blind faith bill will be introduced once again in the ongoing session of the state legislature. Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said that if his government failed to introduce the bill, an ordinance will be issued to effect the implementation of the modified draft.

When the issue of the rising cases of ‘narbali’ (human sacrifice) and superstitions was raised in the state assembly during the question hour, members also questioned about the fate of the delayed bill. Ganpatrao Deshmukh of Peasants and Workers Party said that it was high time to introduce the bill.

“The draft with the few changes will be placed before the state cabinet for the approval before tabling the bill. The contents on which the objections were raised are reconsidered,” he said.
This may be the fifth time that the bill will come before the cabinet for approval. In 2003, it was first approved by the cabinet and was decided to send it to the Centre as it comes under the purview of the concurrent list. Modified draft then was again approved by the cabinet in 2004.

However, the state was dissolved for elections before the ordinance was issued. After the approval by the newly-formed cabinet, it was tabled in the state legislature on April 13, 2005 where it was opposed by the treasury benches. The government then chose to dilute the objectionable part before obtaining the cabinet nod for the fourth time. It was again tabled in the assembly in December 2005 where it got passed with majority.

However, the 79-member legislative council, especially members from the saffron parties, strongly opposed it and sent to the joint select committee. Since then the draft has been in cold storage for last five years.
