A businessman travelling in a taxi and carrying Rs20 lakh in cash to deposit at a Mahalaxmi bank on Tuesday, was looted in broad daylight by three armed men who came in a Maruti car.

The incident took place at 12pm on Mumbai Central Bridge. Sanjay Sharma, 44, a partner with Jawahar Distributor at Chinchbunder, Dongri, hired a taxi from his office, as usual, to deposit cash with the Bank of India at Mahalaxmi.

As the taxi came on to the Mumbai Central Bridge, suddenly a white Maruti car (MH-03-H-6204) arrived from the opposite direction and intercepted the taxi.

Before Sharma could figure out what was happening, three persons brandishing choppers rushed to his taxi. The trio threatened Sharma and the taxi driver with choppers before snatching the bag of cash from Sharma.

Later, they escaped in the same car. Sharma shouted for help and a passer-by called the Tardeo police.

“On learning of the incident, the police rushed to the spot and asked the main control room to inform all police stations across the city to conduct a nakabandi,” said ACP ( Tardeo Division) Raja Tambat, adding that during the nakabandi, the Maruti car was found abandoned at Bhuleshwar after half an hour and three choppers found inside.

Tardeo police have formed three special teams to nab the robbers, Tambat said.
