A 16-year-old girl, who left her home in Bihar for a better life in Mumbai, was raped repeatedly by a youth for the past one week. The girl alleged that the youth raped her in a compartment of the Rajdhani Express and in a parked tempo at Mumbai Central area repeatedly.
Sonu Alakhram Gautam, 21, who lives in a slum near Mumbai Central railway station, was arrested by the Nagpada police on Sunday. “The victim was sitting at Girgaum Chowpatty for hours. Seeing her alone, a police patrol team approached her. Then she narrated her tragic story,” said an officer from the Nagpada police station.
According to the police, the victim used to stay with her mother, brother and sister in Patna. “The victim’s brother and sister used to fight with her regularly. On July 28, she reached Mumbai Central railway station at around 9pm. She went to the nearby New Central Hotel for breakfast the next morning, where Gautam befriended her,” he said.
The officer said the victim confided in Gautam and sought help to get her employed somewhere. “Gautam promised to get her a job and accommodation,” the officer said, adding that he took her to different places in the city.
“Gautam took her to a compartment of the Rajdhani Express and raped her. He then took the victim to his sister’s place in Nagpada and stayed there for some days. On July 31, Gautam gave the victim a railway ticket and asked her to leave for her native place.
The girl reached Delhi, but returned to Mumbai. She met Gautam again at the same hotel and the latter took advantage of her,” said the officer.
“Gautam raped the victim in a parked tempo in Mumbai Central area on the night of August 3, 4 and 5,” he said. He has been remanded in police custody till August 12.
