The Hindu Janjagruti Samiti and Sanatan Sanstha have embarked on a mission to spread public awareness of celebrating Ganeshotsav in an eco-friendly and pious manner. Volunteers of these social organisations have met more than 400 Ganesh mandals in the city, besides organising
workshops.

Addressing the media last week, Hindu Janjagruti Samiti’s Sunil Ghanvat said, “There is no place for DJs and music systems in the shastriya puja of Lord Ganesh. Many mandals are found celebrating the festival not according to the Hindu shashtras.”

He stressed the need to hold the 10-day festival, beginning September 1 this year, in a conventional way.

“There are certain guidelines laid down in the Hindu holy books on how to install the idol and its immersion. We are holding workshops for mandals to convey this,” Parag Gokhale, a Samiti volunteer said.

The two social outfits have also held workshops on proper puja for 100 housing societies. The Samiti has been conducting such campaigns for the past nine years.

An exhibition and a session on Ganesh puja will be conducted by the Samiti at Udyan Prasad Mangal Karyalaya on September 7, 8 and 9.

Sculptor Milind Joshi, who makes idols of shadu (clay), said that he follows the shastras while making the idols that are later marketed by Guruprasad Enterprises. Chaitanya Tagade of Guruprasad Enterprises said they have made 10,000 clay idols this year, and 7,000 were already booked.

“The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has appreciated our efforts and granted permission to put up stalls in Mumbai. We have targetted 21,000 clay Ganesh idols next year,” Tagade said.

Members of Sanatan Sanstha are also visiting schools to create awareness among children to curb wrong practices of Ganesh puja and immersion.
