When the rock band Pentagram premiered their ‘Mental Zero’ at the Carter Road promenade nearly two years ago, children from the nearby slums crowded near the stage. “The song’s appeal goes beyond urban English speaking audiences since the beat of the bass line is directly derived from the street sounds of Mumbai,” says vocalist Vishal Dadlani.

The song is now part of a music album titled Bloodywood which will be launched at the Hard Rock Cafe on Tuesday. The band will then embark on a tour to promote their album across Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Delhi. Other band members include guitarist Randolph Correia, drummer Shiraz Bhattacharya and bassist Papal Mane.

Dadlani adds that Mumbai is the biggest influence on this record. “Songs like 'Mental Zero', 'In My Head' and 'Tomorrow’s Decided' incorporate the buzz of the city and its surroundings. There are tracks like This Could Get Ugly, Nocturne and Think I Get You which are influenced by situations that Mumbai creates in your head like keeping you awake at night through its non-stop chatter.”

The idea is to create awareness amongst audiences about their own creative sides. And despite its quirky title, the album has nothing to do with the Hindi film industry or its nickname. “There is a silent cultural revolution that is changing the way India is seen and heard all over the globe. But across the country, or even the world for that matter, only the Indian mainstream is heard.” Hence the band came up with the name Bloodywood for their new record, which reflects the antithesis to the mainstream. “The album is a sonic slice of the other side of Mumbai.”

Dadlani adds that there is a viable alternative to the mainstream arts including film, music and theatre. “The offbeat is vibrant, edgy, sharp and beautiful and it is finding its own strength. And through Bloodywood, we are promoting art for art’s sake.”

The band will also be showcasing the recording and performing of the album through their online show PentaTV.
