Leader of opposition Eknath Khadse has alleged the irregularities by former chief minister Ashok Chavan while favouring a cluster development project at Lower Parel by a city builder, are to the tune of Rs4,000 crore.

Khadse, without naming Chavan, said that he approved the cluster plan of the Sreepati Group of companies despite objections raised by the urban development and other departments. He said that the plots located in Lower Parel were undertaken by the builder for redevelopment under 33(9) of development control rule, but he had no requisite primary permissions.

“The urban development department had clearly stated that the project had the permission of nearly 40% and the requisite 70% of the consent was possible only if the Mhada and BMC allowed it. Even the high power committee for cluster development projects, had passed adverse remarks. Despite this, the former chief minister gave a go-ahead to the project in May 2010,” Khadse said.

He raised the issue of Vasundhara Co-Op Housing society in Juhu and said that IPS and IAS officers grabbed the land originally meant for police personnel. He said that the officers were minting money by renting out the flats illegally.

Khadse also alleged another irregularity related to a Pune-based plot meant for houses of police personnel. He said the plot at Yerwada was allotted to a builder by bending urban land ceiling rules.

Not only  the opposition, but even the members from ruling Congress and Nationalist Congress Party criticised the government over the irregularities in the infrastructure projects.

Baba Sidique, Congress, alleged about the nexus between babus and the Reliance, which has been paid a higher value for the implementation of the Metro project. “The bidders in Bangalore and Chennai got Rs250 crore and Rs300 crore per km for laying lines and other construction works respectively, whereas the Reliance was paid Rs350 crore for Mumbai Metro,” he said.
