Vijay Palande, the main suspect in the Oshiwara senior citizen murder who reportedly escaped from police custody on Tuesday night, claimed he has been falsely implicated by the police when produced in the Andheri metropolitan magistrate’s court on Wednesday.

Palande claimed he was not absconding — in fact, he was not even in the city on Tuesday. He further claimed senior crime branch officials asked him to come to Mumbai and when he met them on Wednesday morning, he was arrested.

On Wednesday, at 12.15pm, the police fortified the Andheri metropolitan magistrate’s court premises as Palande was brought there.

As the police got him out of the jeep, Palande, who was wearing a red T-shirt and jeans, looked towards the mediapersons and started screaming that he is innocent and has been framed in the case. When the policemen tried to restrain him, he became violent. A constable sustained a minor injury on the thumb of his left hand in the scuffle.

Inside the court room, Palande said: “I was never an accused in the case and was not absconding. I was in constant touch with the police since the murder took place.”

“I was in Kolhapur on Tuesday for some work when I received a phone call from the crime branch officers. I immediately left for Mumbai. When I reached Karad, I got a phone call from a friend asking me if I had been arrested in a murder case. I was shocked.”

Palande told the court that he tried to call up joint commissioner of police Himanshu Roy, but could not reach him.

“I then called up additional commissioner of police Deven Bharti who asked me to meet him. I reached Churchgate station and called up Bharti again at 12.40am, and asked him to meet me there,” Palande told the court.

“Bharti told me to meet assistant commissioner of police Arvind Mahabdi. I met Mahabdi in the suburbs, after which I was taken to the Oshiwara police station. I was assaulted and threatened by the police and later arrested in the murder case. I have not eaten anything since Tuesday night.”

Defence lawyer DR Sharma said: “The police’s claim that my client had gone absconding is totally false and baseless. They are speculating his involvement in the murder case due to the earlier criminal cases registered against him.”
