Beth Osnes, professor of theatre in the University of Colorado, USA, is in Pune with a purpose — to shape trainers by using techniques that emerged from voice exercises of theatre artistes and send social messages.

She is here to help Appropriate Rural Technology Institute (ARTI) to take their innovations to the uneducated rural masses.

She will also train women to help find their ‘own voice’ and reinforce their belief in the power of their voice. The first workshop was held on Wednesday at Samaj Vidnyan Academy while the next will happen on Friday at CHF International. A workshop especially for trainers will be held at Arti, Phaltan.

Arti has been conducting research on sustainable energy and working on rural development through the application of scientific and technological knowledge.

Beth, who is also the co-founder of an international movement, Mothers Acting Up, has been using theatre skills to help women use their voice for public expression and civic participation.

“Many issues exist because women do not have a voice, their opinions are not asked or sometimes they themselves choose to be silent. We need to help them find their full-embodied voice, and spark conversations and actions. We as artistes are trained in voice exercises. A low voice indicates low confidence and low self-esteem. Once these women learn to put forward their point using right voice pitch, tone and with right body language, they can develop confidence,” said Beth.

She feels that this confidence does the rest of the work. It teaches them to put forward their opinion and make decisions. She will also be holding workshop for trainers to teach them techniques which have been developed from voice exercises of theatre artistes.

“These trainers can then use voice empowerment to suit the target group’s requirements,” she said. She uses theatre as a way to inspire, educate, and empower women for effective advocacy.

Project coordinator of Arti, Priyadarshi Karve, said that they had been facing the problem of convincing rural women about the use of these innovative techniques.
